Men's Health
It was not very long ago that infertility was considered a purely female issue. The number of men who come to my clinic is a fraction of my patient caseload, but I have as much compassion for men as I do my female patients. If women can feel a loss of identity and a sense of being less feminine when they can't get pregnant, men can feel less virile and even ashamed if they can't father a child. Most men are better at hiding their feelings but based on the joy I see in their eyes when their fertility issues resolve, I know how important fertility can be to a man's self-worth.
For many this will be the first time you've considered having acupuncture treatment, and I wish to be completely clear that your physical privacy will be fully respected. There are no acupuncture points directly on the penis. In respect of acupuncture treatment, there are indeed many important points in the lower pelvic region but as there are over 500 acupuncture points on the body, much of the acupuncture will also be on the legs, arms, trunk and back, as well as the points that will be helpful in the groin area. The health issues that affect our sexuality can leave you feeling somewhat vulnerable. My ambition is that you will recognise you are in a context where you can speak freely and honestly about the difficulties you are having.
So whether it is a low concentration (sperm count), poor motility (how they are moving) or poor morphology (how they are shaped), acupuncture may help to increase your fertility. I see many women who have ICSI because of male infertility and whose partners have been reluctant or are unaware that they may be able to improve things through lifestyle changes. My heart sinks when I hear that couples go straight into ICSI before doing anything to try and improve their general health and although there is no certainty that by making changes the sperm will be improved in a reasonable time frame, there is growing evidence that it might.
Other related issues such as erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, retarded ejaculation and premature ejaculation can also be treated using acupuncture. Acupuncture concentrates on strengthening the 'kidney' energy (to do with genetics and reproduction), blood flow, reduce stress and has also be shown to improve sperm motility and morphology.
