Nutrition is the foundation of our health, as every cell in our body requires the right amount of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and other biological molecules to perform all of its biological functions. However, getting all the essential nutrients into our body is not as easy as it sounds, especially with our current agricultural practices, environmental degradation, and prevalent gut dysfunctions and microbiome imbalances, even if we are eating what is considered a very healthy diet. Many factors affect mineral nutrition, such as food preparation, dietary habits, genetic and metabolic disorders, disease, medications, stress, environmental factors as well as exposure to heavy metals.
Rarely does a single nutrient deficiency exist in a person today. Even if you’re not sick, imagine being able to detect how your body is functioning at a cellular level and find out if you’re at optimum health or check for genetic disorders. It’s not only amazing, it’s entirely possible which means you’re in control of your health and have all the information you need to make tweaks to your diet or get recommended supplements to prevent potential health problems.
The precise analytical method of determining the levels of toxins and deficiency of vitamins and minerals is to have a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) test. I use it regularly with clients suffering from fatigue, stress, hypothyroidism, allergies, frequent infections, anxiety, osteoporosis, gut issues, PMS, and for women approaching or going through menopause. This is an extremely non invasive and cost effective screening test you can use to measure the levels of essential minerals in your body, such as magnesium, calcium and zinc as well as important mineral ratios. In addition, the HTMA can help determine the amount of harmful heavy metals in your body especially aluminium, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, lead, mercury and uranium. These heavy metals can build up in our bodies over a period of time and can lead to an array of fertility issues, although often with no visible symptoms. When a couple suffers from recurrent miscarriages, detoxing heavy metals is high on the list of improving health.
For females heavy metal toxicity can lead to:
Our hair contains a representation of all minerals in our body. Moreover unlike blood, urine and saliva tests which are only capable of revealing a person's mineral status at the time such tests are performed. So blood and urine tests are like snapshots whereas a hair analysis is the video of your mineral retention. HTMA provides an indication of a person's mineral stores over a period of time (at least a few months). Overall I find it to
be a very useful tool for getting to the 'root causes' of a person's health.
The benefit of taking a hair sample at home is the easy, private and pain free way in which it is done. Unlike a blood test, there are no needles, no discomfort and no trip to the surgery or hospital. It’s just a snip or two and you’re done. If you are suffering from hair loss, underarm or pubic hair can be used. About 1 teaspoon of hair is required, which needs to be taken from the back of the head. The hair needs to be cut as close to the
scalp as possible, and only the 1.5 inches of hair closest to the scalp is used for the test. The hair sample to be analysed needs to have no
chemical dye or perm on it from the root, at the time of cutting the sample. If the hair sample is dyed or chemically treated, it may give inaccurate results, and the same with permed hair at the root. Some anti-dandruff shampoos may affect some of the mineral results, as may taking an
Epsom salt bath, so it is best to refrain from these for a few days before taking the hair sample. Some clients may need to wait a few weeks for
their natural regrowth before taking a HTMA.
All the instructions are in the hair test kit envelope for you to complete at home and send directly in the envelope provided to the lab.

NUTRITIONAL TESTING
Nutrition is powerful. A few simple tweaks can make a big difference in your body and how you feel. Testing can help pinpoint where to make adjustments. Genova nutritional testing measures areas of the body that are impacted by poor nutrition. Genova's tests identify subtle imbalances related to many common health issues as well as toxic exposure and measures your body's ability to neutralize these toxins.
NutrEval from Genova Diagnostics is a comprehensive blood and urine test for identifying nutritional deficiencies and insufficiencies. This test evaluates a variety of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and other biomarkers to determine dietary deficiencies and imbalances. Testing can also reveal toxic exposures and measure your body's ability to neutralize those toxins. The NutrEval test can detect imbalances that may precede abnormal findings on standard laboratory panels. It therefore identifies the need for changes such as specific nutrients, diet modification, antioxidant protection, detoxification and possible other therapies. Whether you are looking to check for deficiencies, addressing a chronic condition, are aiming for optimal health and wellness, or are a sports professional looking to improve your personal best, this test covers
all of your needs.
Metabolomix+ is a non-invasive personalised nutritional assessment to assess the functional need for antioxidants, B-vitamins, minerals,
digestive support, oxidative stress, fatty acids, and amino acids. Genova's unique approach to nutritional testing begins by assessing your body's biochemical pathways. Marked accumulation of organic acids in urine can signal a metabolic inhibition or block. The metabolic block
may be due to a nutrient deficiency, an inherited enzyme deficit, toxic build-up, or drug effect.
Several diseases are associated with abnormal organic acid, amino acid, and fatty acid levels such as depression, anxiety, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, neurocognitive decline, diabetes, cancer, anorexia, and many others.
This unique profile only requires one urine sample first thing in the morning, making it a great screening tool that is easy to do at home!
Adrenal Stress Profile this is a convenient, non-invasive salivary assay that evaluates the bioactive levels and interrelationships of the body's important stress hormones, cortisol and DHEA. This profile serves as an insightful tool for uncovering biochemical imbalances that can be associated with anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, obesity, diabetes and a host of other clinical conditions.
Four easy at home salivary samples collected throughout the day allow for circadian rhythm assessment of cortisol release along with DHEA.
Results are presented in a personalized report so that your GP/Practitioner can help you create a plan specific to your needs.
